Since the beginning of Moorea Seal’s career as a creative entrepreneur, being her own boss has required her to wear a variety of hats — and to learn how to carve out space for a personal life. When she started her Etsy shop in 2009, she was working full time as a nanny for two different families, offering freelance blog design services and posting on her own blog 10 times a week. “Oh, and I was in a band,” Moorea says.
Eager to put her illustration degree to work, the Seattle-based artist initially considered her Etsy shop a place to experiment with various forms of artistic expression, listing original drawings in addition to handmade jewelry. As her jewelry designs became increasingly popular, Moorea’s presence on the web also flourished. She amassed nearly one million followers on her Pinterest profile, which she attributes to thoughtful curation and a focus on lifestyle-centric imagery. Encouraged, in part, by her rapidly growing audience on the web, Moorea launched a storefront of her own in 2013 — first online and adding a brick and mortar space in Seattle less than one year later. Her shop, Moorea Seal, features products from over 110 handmade designers in addition to her own designs.
